‘Psychic Driving’ is the story of Linda Macdonald, a survivor of Dr Ewen Cameron’s CIA-funded experiments in ‘depatterning’.
Admitted to the Allen Memorial Institute, Montreal in March 1963, most likely suffering from post-natal depression, Linda was falsely diagnosed as an acute schizophrenic in need of “deep sleep” treatment. Cameron did not advise her family of what the ‘treatment’ involved.
Linda was sent to ‘The Sleep Room’ within a month of her arrival, existing in a state of drug-induced coma for 73 days while ‘Psychic Driving’ tapes (loops of a single statement or of white noise played through headphones or helmets with fitted speakers for hours at a time) ran continuously. Subjected to massive doses of various mind-altering drugs including LSD and 109 sessions of electroshock therapy, Linda’s entire memory had been wiped by the time she was released in September 1963.
